They had three tests for all the young men wishing to become the next Emperor:
1. Fight with a sword
The contestant would have to fight three challengers using flint-tipped wooden swords. The first to draw blood would be the winner.
2. Reading a star chart
The contestant would have to interpret a picture of the heavens drawn by the Chief Priest. The test would include predicting the harvest and recognising all of the important stars.
3. Fighting a mock battle
The contestant was put in charge of a force of five hundred soldiers. He had to use the soldiers to track, surround and capture three hundred soldiers that were been sent into the countryside for this purpose. This was the most important test as it tested the contestant's leadership skills, his battle tactics and his ability to keep a cool head and handle pressure.
Aztecs would choose their new leader when the old one seemed close to death. I think a council of four (who advised the Emperor) and other nobles, helped to choose the new leader. Women could never be leaders.
