General Robert Lee tried to invade the union with the battle of Gettysburg but it did not end good. The Confederacy was hurt badly. After this battle the South didnt try to invade the north again. Thus a reason for the union win.

The losses suffered by the Confederate were so high that the Confederacy was never more be able to mount a large scale invasion against the northern territory.

Furthermore, the Union victory signed the end of every Confederacy's hope of being recognized as an independent nation and militarily supported by France and Great Britain.
