There were two main impetuses that France drew from the colonization of Burma for its colonization of Indochina. The first was that the French wanted to maintain a strong position in any part of the world where Britain had a strong position, in order to effectively counter it should war or trade issues arise. Since Burma is in Southeast Asia, France sought territories in Southeast Asia, which resulted in taking Indochina. The second was the amount of wealth that Britain was able to extract from Burma made France desirous of acquiring the same high levels of wealth, so the colonization of Indochina went forward.
