The burning of Columbia deprived South Carolina of its capital and its second most important city. Columbia had been a relatively wealthy area and it was plunged into abject poverty. Most of its centers of culture and history were destroyed. What happened in Columbia was a horrible example of what can happen when people intentionally start a war. The Confederate movement began in Columbia and in some ways it ended there. The destruction of Columbia (and Atlanta before it) left bitter scars in the memory of southern people for generations.
