Many families were changed after the war. About 620,000 people were killed in the war, and many of those people were loved ones. The civil war separated families because people were drafted into the war, many men and young boys. Some people would come back with serious injuries and that would cause them to lose their jobs or their family.

How did the civil war affect the soldier's families?

Many men died during the war from battles and disease, so many families were left without uncles, brothers, sons, husbands, etc. Their families lives were sometimes filled with worry if their family members were not located. For some southern families, their lives were devastated from General Sherman's march through their towns. Homes, crops, churches, and everything they had ever known was gone.
