The people became unnerved. Some politicians went looking for Russians or "reds" in different corners of the country. The nuclear weapons race was on and fallout shelters got built just in case the nightmare happened. I grew up in Australia away from the direct Russian/American cold war focus, yet we felt it here. We didn't build fallout shelters but we were never sure if the nightmare would happen. The cold war has diminished but still both countries spy on each other and China spies on everyone.
