The stones were placed on wooden sledges and dragged along plank roads by gangs of slaves using ropes made from papyrus or palm fronds. Water or oil was poured on the runners to overcome friction.

∙ 12y agoThe limestone blocks were cut out in the quarries close the pyramid site. Once the limestone blocks quarried they were lowered onto sledges. A gang of about twenty slaves dragged the sledge along a causeway laid with planks. Water or oil was poured in front of the blades of the sledge to help them slide more easily.
Some of the pyramid stones were made from granite quarried at Aswan some 400 miles from the Giza site. These were floated down the rive Nile to the pyramid site. then they were loaded onto sledges hauled by slaves.

∙ 12y agoStone blocks were transported on sledges hauled by gangs of slaves hauling on ropes made from papyrus reeds. The larger the block the more slaves were required. A pyramid block weighing about two tons may of taken 20 slaves but one of the 70 ton granite blocks used for the roof of the so called King's Chamber took perhaps 500 to haul. These blocks came from over 400 miles away from quarries located at Aswan. They were mounted on sledges and floated down the River Nile on giant barges made from papyrus reeds. Once at the pyramid site they would be unloaded from the barges and hauled along a causeway. Imagine one of those 70 ton blocks coming up the causeway. On top the stone the foreman stands bawling orders. Ahead of the block stretch lines of straining naked slaves sweat pouring from their bodies. Behind the block are other men prying at the sledge with great wooden bars. The stone moves slowly a few feet at a time, the slaves front and rear pulling, prying and chanting to the shouts of the foreman. Other slaves pour water onto the blades to ease the passage of the sledge.
