They developed their own dialects of the Greek language. Some, like Sparta, developed into a large, complex community. Other city-states built walls around their communities. They formed armies for protection, created their own governments, and collected taxes.

A group of tribes would take over enough fertile land to support them and establish farms. They would fortify a high point (acropolis) as a defensive refuge, and as the urban area grew, usually build a defensive wall around the houses.

They were progressively ruled by chiefs, then petty kings, then aristocracies who displaced each other. As all would-be rulers were dependent on the working males to defend the city and land, the people at large progressively gained influence, with the aristocracy giving way to assemblies of the warrior-farmers, and in extreme cases, to all adult male citizens.

The franchise changed back and forth in many cities, as the aristocracies, farmer-warriors and general populace succeeded or failed through the centuries in maintaining government and security and prosperity.
