Basically, the Caste System was a reward system. Depending on how you lived your life, you either advanced to a higher caste in the next life or you were placed in a lower caste and had to work your ay back up through redemption. ----------- The Hindu caste system was a way of classifying people based on their occupation and intellect. The most learned were called brahmins. They usually mastered the scriptures, or became priests. The next class were the Kshatriyas. They belonged to the warrior calls. These people are known for their bravery and valour. The third class were the Vaishyas. They were the merchants who were good with trade. And the last were the Shudras who were the labourers. They were good with the manual labour. However, in modern times, casteism is sadly determined by birth than by one's qualification. Hence if you are born in a Brahmin family, you become a brahmin by default.
Karma is the work done (involves mechanical, mental, socio-economical) by human beings that remains unchanged (conserved). Bad karma results in suffering and good karma helps in development of the individual. According to Hinduism Karma never dies, not even after the death of a human being and when he/she reincarnates, his/her karma determines with what qualities he/she will be born, in what family etc.
In Hinduism Caste is the division of society according to the work and qualities of an individual. Not a single prime religious book of Hinduism (Vedas, Upanishads, Gita) say that birth determines the caste of a person or a person acquires the caste of the parents. In Gita Lord Krishna says God has made four castes according to the qualities and karma.
It was believed that good actions result in birth in castes higher up in the hierarchy. So those already in higher castes were induced to maintain their caste status, and the lower castes were induced to rise up in the hierarchy. The society benefited in both the cases.
Yea, Hinduism influenced caste system a lot in the past. There were divisions like Brahman, Baisya, Kaisthya, Sudra. While the former was engaged in workshipping, the Baishyas were engaged in business, the Kaisthyas were engaged in administrative activities. The sudras were the last who were engaged in all types of petty jobs including carrying of night soils from others' houses. Gandhiji later termed this class as 'Harijans' to eliminate caste system prevalent in the society under Hinduism. After post independence era, Dr.B.R. Ambedkar, the Founding Father of Indian Constitution sincerely tried to uplift the community affected by caste system, by incorporating reservations for scheduled castes and tribes.
