They were the converts to Catholicism, who built the churches, who paved the way for more missionaries/missions. They were the ones who taught the Spanish how to farm and grow food and the animals to eat in the new land. Then they were the ones who did the farming. They were the guides who showed the Spanish even more lands to conquer and colonize. They were the ones the were forced to give up there gold and made the Spanish rich from all the new world gold the stripped from the natives. So California and all Indians were the cannon fodder that helped the Spanish colonial system prosper.
