The industrial reveloution happened because industry-factories were created and made it possible to mass produce items. Also better houses were made and people wanted more money and started getting jobs. The steam engine was soon built which meant that people could travel easier.

The Industrial Revolution was more of a process and not a single event.

It started with the opening of international trade and commerce in Britain, as the "Empire" and its associated territories (such as the fledgling "New World") expanded more and more raw materials were shipped back to Britain.

Within a relatively short space of time local industries which were undeveloped and based largely on manual processing of materials were quickly overwhelmed.

More and more automated processes were sought in order to turn these raw materials around quickly into finished goods for an expanding and "consumer good" hungry market.

Some of the first inventions which contributed to the escalation of the revolution were based on steam power, such as pumps, engines and weaving machines. The integration of these items into the processing lines meant that goods could be produced faster, cheaper and at a higher quality than they had been previously.

As output was increased the demand for raw materials increased (coal, gas, cotton, minerals), simply perpetuating the cycle.

On the downside, many small businesses (and home industries) were quickly put out of business as they couldn't compete on price and quality.
