They did not fight. There were no black mobs participating in the riot. Blacks were the victims, along with the rich. They were brutally attacked and lynched. Rioters attacked using their bare hands, and/or any other object they could find that could be used as a weapon.

Furthermore, the rioters were not exclusively Irish. Rioters consisted of poor whites of all nationalities and ethnicities. The Irish were the largest group, but that is only because there were more Irish immigrants in New York City at the time than any other nationality. The Irish were immigrating to the U.S. in huge numbers because the Potato Famine (which took place roughly from 1845 to 1852) forced them to flee Ireland.

What group of immigrants caused riots in New York City in 1863 because they thought freed blacks were taking over all their jobs?

The New York City Draft Riots took place from July 13 to July 16 of 1863. They were not caused by one, single group of immigrants. The draft favored the rich, as anyone who could afford it could pay $300 to avoid going to war. So it was the city's poorest residents who rioted, and this included both native-born Americans and immigrants. And the immigrants involved in the riots were from many different countries all around the world. There were probably more Irish immigrant rioters than any other nationality, but that is only because New York City had more Irish immigrants than any other nationality at that time. And lastly, the Draft Riots were not primarily about freed blacks taking working class jobs from whites. The rioters were primarily angry about being asked to fight in a war that was so bloody. Going to war seemed like a death sentence. They blamed blacks for being the cause of the war. They did not feel they should have to fight for black people's freedom. They also felt they were being asked to fight and die so that black people could come up North and compete for their jobs, but that was not the primary reason for the riots. New immigrants were especially angry about the draft, as they did not want to fight and die for a country they had only just moved to.

Identify three ways that the Civil War affected New York State and New York City?

I'm sorry, I can't give you three ways (maybe someone else can finish this answer for me), but I can give you one: the New York City Draft Riots, which took place from July 13 to July 16 of 1863. The city's poor -- especially its Irish immigrants -- were very angry about being drafted to fight in the Civil War. The draft favored the rich, as anybody who was drafted could avoid going to war by paying $300 and finding a substitute to fight for him. Only the rich could afford to do that. Furthermore, at the time the Irish were New York City's largest immigrant population. The immigrant population was especially angry about the draft, as they were often drafted to fight only a few weeks or months after they became citizens. They felt it was unfair that they were being asked to fight and die for a country that they had only just recently moved to. As the Irish were the largest immigrant population, their voices were the loudest. The Draft Riots began on the morning of the first day of Draft Week (Monday, July 13, 1863). The riot started with the burning of the Draft offices, and lasted for three terrifying days. The rioters looted, smashed, and burned countless shops, offices, and homes of the rich. They attacked anyone and everyone who was either black, a policeman, or a well-dressed, rich-looking person. Countless blacks were brutally lynched in the streets, as the rioters blamed blacks for bringing about the Civil War. An orphanage for black children was even burned to the ground.

How did the nation's first draft affected the nation?

It angered many and the idea of a Rich Man's War, Poor Man's Fight. This was caused by the exception in the Draft Law which allowed an individual to hire a substitute to serve in his place. It even led to Draft Riots.

Yes, especially in the North where the Irish and other poor immigrants fought because of the Draft that was instituted in the North. Immigrants really fought on every side, but mostly in the North because the North had a draft.
