It gave the average infantry soldier better firepower, being semi-automatic and holding eight cartridges (the standard German and Japanese rifles of the Second World War were bolt action and held five cartridges in the magazine). It almost certainly affected the outcome of some battles, but the rifle itself is only a tool - transformation of the US Army came about through a number of means and reasons.
your garand was produced in 1945. the M1 garand was to become a weapon in the US arsenal starting in 1936.
If he's right about that, then he has either a Springfield M1903, or an M1917 rifle. Those are the only two 7.62x63 (US .30-06) rifles used by the US before the adoption of the M1 Garand, and no other .30-06 rifles were adopted for general service after the Garand.

The M1 Garand Rifles and M1 Steel Pots where manufactured in 1941 and fielded in 1942. The US M1 Abrams MBT (Main Battle Tank) was fielded in about 1978.

It was used in every theater of the war. It was used in every theater of the war in which the US Army and Marines became involved in late 1942 and after, but the M1903 continued to be issued until 1944 because there were never enough M1 Garands to go around. The war began in 1939, and there were places where US troops never fought and the M1 Garand was not used. (Poland, Egypt, Libya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Russia.....and Denmark which was liberated by the British who did not use the M1 Garand). US troops defending the Philippines in '42 did not have the M1, but the US troops who recaptured the Philippines in '45 had them. It must be remembered that WW2 began on Sep 1, '39. Japan declared war on the US on Dec 7, '41, with Germany and Italy declaring war on the US on Dec 11, '41. The M1 Garand had been in service with US paratroopers since 1936, but it was not produced in great numbers until after the US entered the war.
Depends on the laws where you ARE (We get question from several different nations) In the US, if you meet the requirements to own a firearm, you can own an M1 Garand. They are even sold by an arm of the US government to US citizens- the Department of Civilian Marksmanship. See the link at the bottom of the page.
Well- there is a problem. There was no such rifle in the US military as a "tanker" Garand. There were several versions developed for testing, but there were problems and they were not put into production. There have been several companies making what they CALLED a Tanker Garand, but there is no standard design. They vary between 6 and 8 inches shorter than the original M1 Garand.
