Debt relief, a balanced budget and a massive influx of capital. It was quickly removed by way of corruption and patronage in which a very small number received any benefit and by way of which a great number were even further impoverished. They spent a great deal on the defense of their country, suffered th loss of life of many citizens, many were disabled, and a great deal of property was destroyed. In compensation, they received less then half of what they had been offered pre war for their lost lands. They may have won the moral high ground, but that does little to feed, clothe and house the starving masses.
