One factor was if people were unable to work, then they were of no use. Otherwise it was a question of supply and demand; if there was little need for workers, then only the healthiest would avoid the gas chambers.

They didnt pick people in the camps who to kill, they killed random jews

The Holocaust happened because hitler wanted a aryan Europe so all unaryan jews and other types of people was sent to camps and/or ghettos depending on avalability of space

They decided by who was the most able. In the begining it was the most able to fight who were killed, later it would be those who were least able to work who were killed. The elderly were killed first, then the children, then the weaker and infirm adults.

The Nazi's wanted to cleanse the population of Germany of all Jews, Blacks, Gypsies, and any other non-arean race. These people were to all be killed and this was called The Final Solution.
