Cyrus the Great conquered much of its territory from 539 BCE. It expanded under subsequent kings, especially Darius I and Xerxes I.

It was taken over by Alexander the great progressively from 330 BCE. On his death it was split up by his generals into what is known today as the Hellenistic Kingdoms.
