The Persian war was a series of battles fought between Greece and Persia. Such as Battle of Thermopylae, Battle of Marathon and Battle of Salamis. Though both sides suffered heavy losses to their armies, Greece won the battle. They did this in the battle of Salamis. The kept retreated to the strait of Salamis and the Persians kept advancing. They did not know how to navigate in the waters and thus Greece sunk around 200 ships of the Persians and they surrendered. The Greeks had won a lengthy battle and this also led to the making of the Delian League.

There was no Greek empire. The city-state of Athens converted the Delian League which it led agaist Persia into an empire and lived high on the hog on the proceeds, and confronted other Greek city-states in its overconfidence.

For a time it diverted them from their usual fighting against each other, resulting in Persia having to make peace against the Delian League led by Athens. However the Greek cities soon went back to their usual inter-city warfare and in a major conflict, the 27-year Peloponnesian War between alliances led by Athens and Sparta, Persia got some revenge for its defeat by financing the Spartan league to defeat Athens.

It gave the city the chance to take over leadership of the Delian League formed to oppose Persian interference. Athens collected the contributions of its members and maintained a dominant navy for the League.

When the Persian threat was ended, Athens continued to collect the tribute and misapplied it to beautify the city, keep nearly half its population on the public payroll, and use the navy to extort the tribute from increasingly unwilling cities, turning the League into an empire of its own.

This eventually brought it into conflict with the Peloponnesian League and a devastating 27 year war in which Athens lost its empire.

It opportunistically turned the Delian League which it had led against the Persian Empire into an empire of its own and lived high on the proceeds.
