The result of the Spanish/American War helped the United States become a world power by letting other countries know that the United States was not going to back down. Other countries did not want to start a conflict with the United States after this war.
It showed the world that the US was ready to expand its empire and gain resources in other parts of the world. It also let the world see how strong the US's army and navy really were, as this was the first time in quite a while that they fought anybody outside of America.

Many Americans did in fact believe that the US needed to expand its power overseas to ensure economic growth. Others believed that this would not help.

Ultimately, the desire to curb Spanish colonial power and expand American influence in the Caribbean also played a crucial role.
