How did the US become regionalized and how did the Jackson Administration address that regionalization?

When Missouri applied for statehood in 1817, sectionalism became a problem. It became a division between those in the southern portion of the United States who favored slavery and the northern portion which did not. While the country was currently on an even basis with eleven slave and eleven non slave states, Missouri would tip the scale in favor of slave states. Advocates of sectionalism like John Calhoun believed states should be allowed to nullify or ignore federal law whenever they chose to.
