I was 8 years old in 1941, so I do remember some things about rationing.
First, people listened to radio alot. And all the information was aired many times a day. There were posters in every public building in town. It was in the news paper, and letters mailed to everyone. There were short educational films at the movies too. One did have to fill out papers and register, and I believe that was with the post office or mail in.
You has to have ration stamps for things like gas, shoes, sugar, butter, coffee, and tires. I remember my mom taking ration stamps from a book to buy my shoes. There were probably other things on the ration list, but these are the ones I remember.
Butter rationing was what developed oleo margarine. At first the Dairy Association would not let the Oleo people color their product. The Oleo came in a big hunk and there was a dry color packet included, and the buyer had to color the oleo themselves. It could not even be put in the dairy case with the butter.
I think the ration books were regulated through the OPA Office of Price Administration. Rationing may have been a branch of this office.
Cars had a sticker that would tell the service station person what priority the car owner had in buying gas. An "A" sticker would get your more gas than the others. Doctors ,and some city officials, emergency vehicles, war factory workers, and some farm machinery got A stickers. My mother did not own a car so I do not remember what just regular people had.
This was a war that was in high priority by the American People. They backed it up with everything they had. There was a news commentator named Gabriel Heater that URGED U S Citizens on to, "Do their duty". He was not the only one. Every media including Hollywood got into the war effort. Schools sold war stamps. There was a book that when you filled it with with war stamps one could trade it for a war bond. Hollywood Stars went on nation wide tours to sell stamps and bonds. Different time, different attidude,---we were.
There are several principles that are inherent in the structure of the US Constitution and in the organization of the US Government. The most important of all is the principle that all people are created equal and that liberty is the fundamental right of all people.

The definition given by Abraham Lincoln is: By the people, Of the people, For the people. It means that the government is from the people and is made by many people and its for the sake of people itself..........

They instituted rationing to make certain there were enough raw materials FOR WAR PRODUCTION.
To reduce the demand on the food rationing system for fruits and vegetables which could be grown at home.
The government found it necessary to ration food, gas, and even clothing during that time. Americans were asked to conserve on everything. With not a single person unaffected by the war, rationing meant sacrifices for all. In the spring of 1942, the Food Rationing Program was set into motion. Rationing would deeply affect the American way of life for most. The federal government needed to control supply and demand. Rationing was introduced to avoid public anger with shortages and not to allow only the wealthy to purchase commodities.
The US government did not fully take away tea, coffee, sugar and butter during World War II, but the government severely rationed these items. Rationing meant that each person or family could only buy a set amount with rationing books they brought to the store and the book was stamped when a purchase was made (so nobody could break the rules). The US government needed to send food to the troops. So all US citizens had to make sacrifices to support the war-- rationing food items was a huge sacrifice, but people were willing to do it to protect the health of and feed "our boys" in the war so the soldiers could defeat Germany and Hitler.
either movies educate us or spoil us
To save resources for the war effort.
Because otherwise it wouldn't have been enough to go around.
Answerthey didn't they had more than enough food to last AnswerNot true--there was wartime rationing starting basically as soon as the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Everything was rationed.
Wartime rationing was necessary for various reasons. One reason was that many goods were in short supply and rationing allowed the government to maintain control over what was available. Another reason for rationing was to insure everyone had access to needed supplies rather than some people hoarding them.
