Before the war the Allies had agreed to divide the Korean peninsula without the consent of the Korea people. These agreements were made during the Potsdam Conference.

"The Japanese military forces, after being completely disarmed, shall be permitted to return to their homes with the opportunity to lead peaceful and productive lives."

Possessions were divided between the Allied Powers as follows:

USSR: North Korea (not a full occupation)

United States: South Korea (not a full occupation)

Soviet forces arrived first. Occupying the Northern Half, stopping at the 38th parallel as it was agreed with the United States.

The USAMGIK (Military Government in Korea) refused to recognise the provisional government in Korea due to it's speculations that it was communist.

The U.S decided to hold elections earlier then it was agreed upon. (The U.S and the Soviets had agreed to set up a joint commission for an eventual single free government. A decision was made that a four-power trusteeship of up to five years would be needed before Korea attained independence)

The Soviets boycotted those elections and had their own elections a few months later.

The war started soon afterwards but the Soviets never had "boots on the ground"

China decided to support the DPRK government when it was pushed back by the U.S forces.

Soviets supplied mostly equipment. Yet they also had undeclared pilots, which did not operate above the sea to avoid being captured.

Before invading the South. Kim Il-sung had made sure to have the support of his communist allies (Mao and Stalin)

From what i know the USSR was helping the North Koreans and the Chinese. So they wanted North Korea to be a communist country. I can't remember if they were directly in the war if they were they had huge stock piles of steel pot helmets while the Chinese and North Koreans had light cloth caps and quilted jackets for mobility. The USSR also, helped by giving weapons such as the old Moision Nagant rifle of World War II. So for the most part for the answer is that the view was they whanted to help North Korea to be a successful communist country. I hope i have helped answer your question yet it could have been clearer.
