As a Ball of Fire. According to author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919], the Wizard suspended a ball of cotton from the ceiling. He then poured oil to make the ball burn. As a ventriloquist, he could be at a safe distance while projecting his voice to seem to be coming right out of the fire.
