In the US Civil War, the South had a number of advantages. Perhaps one of the best ones was the fact that they did not have to conquer the North to win. Their goal for independence would come when the North no longer wished to continue the conflict.
The Civil War between the North and South started due to their respective beliefs about slavery and states' rights. The South ultimately decided to secede from the Union, but Lincoln wanted to bring the South back into the country.

Goals of the North were to abolish slavery while goals of the South were to keep slavery. The North's advantages were that they had railroads so that they could move equipment etc. round easily while the South didn't have as many and it was more difficult to move supplies, which was a huge factor in the war. The Souths advantages were that they had slaves working for them doing the work while the North did not. Also the North had freed slaves fighting for them as well.
Much bigger population to recruit from. Advantage in artillery. Manufacturing facilities for war supplies. A President of immense capability, who learned how to choose good Generals.
