Two types of amphibian tanks were used in the Vietnam War; the NVA (North Vietnamese Army) PT76 amphibious light tank and the US Army's M551 Sheridan light tank (offically called the armored airborne reconnaissance assault vehicle). 1. The PT76 (Soviet built) was armed with a 76mm main gun and could swim across the water via two water jets that exited from the tanks aft section. 2. The M551 Sheridan armed with a 152mm main gun, could swim across the water by the driver shifting his transmission into the water mode, turning on his bilge pumps, and the vehicle's tracks acted like the paddles of a Mississippi River Boat.
