Anglo-Saxons had horses for riding, both in war and as civilian transport, although in those days they were NOT used as draught animals. Instead they used oxen for this- ploughing, pulling carts and also for their milk and meat (modern cows did not exist in Anglo-Saxon England).

They also farmed small breeds of sheep, goats and pigs, as well as chickens and geese. Dogs were kept for hunting and as guard-dogs, and cats were used to keep vermin down.

In those days, the country was home to large number of wild boar and deer, which were hunted for their meat. Wolves also existed, and presented a threat to livestock when they hunted in packs, so were hunted down wherever possible.
