Barnes and Noble are the last names of the company's three founders:

- Charles Barnes, William Barnes and G. Clifford Noble. It originated as book-printing press started by Charles in 1873, but the first actually Barnes & Noble Bookstore was started by Charles' son, William and G. Clifford Barnes. Hence "Barnes & Noble". :)

It isn't bankrupt. I think you are confusing it with Borders, which did go bankrupt and went out of business. That said, there have been rumors about Barnes and Noble too. internet companies like Amazon.com have eaten into the sales of so-called "brick-and-mortar" bookstores, because those companies can offer deeper discounts; electronic delivery of books on devices like Kindles have also affected sales. But some people very much enjoy visiting actual (rather than virtual) bookstores: hanging out, browsing, getting recommendations from staff... whether it's at a chain store or locally-owned independent store, they like the human touch to buying books. So far, Barnes and Noble is still around, but only time will tell if they survive.

Author Hinds once owned a bookstore. He then let Gilbert Noble be a partner in the company. They were once names Hinds and Noble. Noble then bought out Hinds years later and partnered with William Barnes and names the store Barnes and Noble.
