The manmade Panama Canal is a sea-level central passage that crosses the Continental Divide. The Continental Divide certainly made the Panama Canal more difficult to build, as engineers had to blast through large sections of basalt rock wall to finish the project. When finished, the canal created a profitable shipping lane that allowed container ships to move through the Continental Divide without circumventing South America.
