Proprietary colonies were colonies in which one or more private land owners had rights normally given to the state. Differently, royal colonies were controlled by kings or rulers of nations and governed by advisors or governors sent to the colony.

A proprietary colony was granted to an individual person or group with full control and ownership rights by means of a royal charter. A royal colony was owned and controlled completely by the royalty.
