Fish have been in the world even before any animals. All life came from the sea and fish were among the last that evolved from more primitive animals. Even the earliest fish evolved 400 million years ago.

There is the common trope of the fish just walking out of the water and finding it has magically transformed into an amphibian. Of course, this is not actually the case. There were numerous intermediates between lobed-fin fishes like the coelocanth (which still exists from 400+ million years ago) and temnospondyl amphibians like eryops (which looks like a giant salamander). These transitional species form the Ichthyostegalia Order. We start seeing lobe-finned fishes that press their fins against the ground for traction and coming up out of the water for limited periods before returning. We then move to species with more defined legs that stay on land more evenly. We then see knee joints and full claws. Some intermediates, like Acanthostega, are so close to the boundary between fish and amphibians that Creationists even disagree about whether it is part of the "amphibian kind" or the "fish kind". We continue to see semi-amphibious fishes to this day, such as the lungfish (which comes onto land and can even breath air even though it spends most of its time in the water) and the mudskipper (which is a completely amphibious fish that presses its pectoral fins into the sand to move on land). While it is guessed that lungfish are somewhat related to the lobe-finned fishes that gave rise to Icthyostegalia, it is quite clear that the mudskipper is a re-evolution of an analogous set of behaviors (similar to how a bat's wing is a re-evolution of an analogous pterosaur wing).
