How did the conquests of Alexander the Great change the culture of the conquered lands?

Alexander tried to introduce Greek culture which he regarded as 'civilising', establishing over 70 Greek-style cities to help this process (modestly naming them Alexandria after himself).

His early death interrupted the process. His general who succeeded him established their own kingdoms (the Hellenistic kingdoms) from his empire. Their effect was to bring the upper classes into line, but the masses kept their own culture.
