Booker T Washington helped raise funds for small community schools and institutions for the advancement of blacks in the South. He also secretly funded cases for civil rights advancement.
Booker was born into slavery. After emancipation (freeing of the slaves) he worked in agriculture. Soon, he sought an education, became a teacher, and then a leader at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
V.S. Naipaul won the Booker Prize in 2001 for his novel "Half a Life." The book explores themes of identity, race, and belonging through the story of an Indian man struggling to find his place in the world.
