It was cheaper, even taking into account the cost of living. I was making the minimum wage of $2.95 an hour, yet I could afford an apartment in San Diego. A fully furnished apartment in Pacific Beach was $350.00 a month, an apartment in Linda Vista was $200.00 a month. Cigarettes were about 75 cents a pack, a beer in a bar was about 50 cents.
Between what my wife made and what I made, we had about $600.00 a month. We did not have a lot of a spending money, but we got by. Where it has hurt the most is the cost of rent. The minimum wage has gone up about three-fold, while the cost of housing has increased at least eight-fold. A $10.00 an hour job today can not support a rent that is in the range of $900.00 for an apartment with all of the additional costs.
