In all probability, it was a an asteroid - a mere 10 miles in diameter - which hit the Earth and wiped out not only the dinosaurs but most of life on Earth. It was only the plucky mammal's, who lived under ground who survived the apocalypse.

65.5 million years ago, an asteroid with a diameter of 6 miles crashed into what is now the Yucatan Peninsula, creating the Chixculub crater. It through so much dust into the atmosphere, that sunlight was blocked for months. Plants died without sunlight, and the herbivorous dinosaurs died without plants to eat. The carnivores soon died out, too, because their prey was gone.

There is evidence, too, that the Chixculub impact preceded the dinosaur extinction, and that the dinosaurs survived for hundreds of thousands of years after, until another, larger asteroid struck and eliminated the non avian dinosaurs. Also, dinosaurs were already dealing with the negative affects of climate change.

The extinction event that wiped out dinosaurs is called the Cretaceous-Tertiary Extinction Event (K-T Extinction, for short... Yes, that is supposed to be a K). The crater left by the asteroid impact is called the Chixculub crater.
