The views of Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton were so markedly different that they gave rise to political parties. Thomas Jefferson, a Democratic Republican, believed that the government was for the people, and that their voices should be listened to. He believed that the central government should be less powerful and favored states' rights. Alexander Hamilton, on the other hand, believed that important issues shouldn't be left up to the common man, but rather an elite, who believed would make the correct decisions. He favored a government with most of the power in the federal government.

After the United States gained their independence from Britain, there were two main political groups that had formed. These groups were the wealthy business owners which were being led by Hamilton and the farmers which were led by Jefferson. The wealthy business owners felt that they should have the main control over the government because of their importance to the economy of the country. The farmers felt that because they were the majority of the citizens they should hold control over the government. These ideas gave birth to the republican and democratic political parties that are still in place today.
