He used the royal guards to take control of the city and had the city gates closed. The king was away leading a battle and could not return to Rome. The king was replaced by two annually elected consuls. Having to men in charge meant that they would counterbalance each other. The short term of office was to ensure that no single man could concentrate power in his hands. For the rest, the Republic retained the institutions which had existed under the monarchy.

The Etruscans more than likely influenced Roman society and Roman culture more heavily because Rome was surrounde4d by Etruscan territory and was ruled by Etruscan kings.
