The Axis countries (primarily Germany, Italy & Japan) had been at war with the Allies (Britain, France, Russia & others) since late 1939 and had achieved many victories. Europe was completely conquered (including France), leaving Britain isolated. The Japanese had taken over large parts of China and the Pacific Ocean. Russia was in danger of collapsing under a German attack that started in mid-1941. The United States had maintained its neutrality during this time but was under heavy pressure to come to Britain's aid. The Japanese staged a pre-emptive attack against the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in December 1941, figuring that the Americans would enter the war sooner or later and hoping to destroy their fleet before it could go into action. America then declared war against Japan and its allies (Germany & Italy). This was a turning point because it brought the enormous military power of the United States against the Axis countries.

∙ 14y agoThis question needs more information. Please clarify who the turning point affected. Does the question refer to Americans, English or Canadians or another nation? Also was it supposed to affect the government or the general populous? The turning point of the war could have been anything, bombing of Pearl Harbor, the bombing of Poland or the Battle of Britain.
