The great depression left many scarring imprints on families, especially the children. In many cases, children had to leave their education behind and had to seek cheap employment at factories to help provide meager financial support. The lack of money circulating around made living conditions horrible. Families, especially immigrant families were living in squalor; either crammed in a single roomed apartment or left to sleep outside.

The children with the wealthy parents stayed at school but for the poor the kids were taken out of school because parents couldn't afford to pay for books . and the kids who went to school teased the ones who didnt. This also meant children got jobs but were paid half the amount men were paid and lost their jobs when they turn 18 . At some schools though there were charities that came and gave children food like wholemeal bread with vegemite and Oranges
