Quite simply because of its immense size and this is proven by, at least, two things - The caliph al-Ma'moon [ruled 813 - 842] attempted to destroy the pyramids of Giza but failed. He did this because of the belief that you do not leave any image without defacing it or any built-up grave without levelling it. The fact that these were part of the legacy of mankind was looked upon as a flimsy excuse. And, Also the outer surface of polished white limestone [casing stones] were plundered during the 1300's, taken away and used for other buildings such as mosques etc. The surface stones had already been loosened by an earthquake. Even without their protection the environment / weather failed to destroy the Great Pyramid.

The great pyramid was finished around 2540 BC. Cleopatra's reign ended in 30 BC. so the great pyramid was roughly 2500 years old in Cleopatra's time. These figures are not exact for the pyramid because we don't know the exact date of its construction or finish, so therefore its impossible to give a precise age for the pyramid during Cleo's time. The great pyramid was finished around 2540 BC.
