President Pierce tried to annex Hawaii in 1849 but the treaty was not even sent to the senate. When Queen Liliuokalani came to the throne she tried to take back control. In January of 1891 the US marine overthrew the queen. The people of Hawaii were pro-American government and sent their treaty of annexation to the Senate and the democrats prevented the approval. President was against expansion and tried to restore the throne to Queen Lil. After the Spanish-American War Hawaii was finally annexed by joint resolution of Congress in July of 1898.
