Because all of the revolutionists took their ideas for a new government from such Philosophs as Locke and Rousseau and Voltaire and that was what really fueled the fire on the French Rev. It was the same with the American Revolution. People really wanted to have a say and they were sick of the absolute monarchy, so they overpowered it with these thoughts of freedom and hope. And when you are one king to a whole country of peasants, you tend to lose.
