With the use of steam power, factories could be built near Natural Resources and where the work force was. Factories started to grow all over England and then spread to the rest of the world. Cities became more populated because the factories offered a lot of jobs. Work in the factory was more reliable than work in the fields due to the fact that farming was dependent on the weather and crops often failed. The steam engine could now make machines in the factories produce materials much faster. By the early 1800's there were hundreds of steampowered machines in the factories. Steam ran the machines in textile mills and other types offactories. In the 1820's lighter and simpler steam engines were made that could be used in small mills and stores and not just large factories.

The internal combustion engine made possible, rapid, efficient and hence relatively (to predecessors) low-cost powered machinery. This applies in fixed plant and to the transport of people and goods over any from local to very long distances on land, at sea and in the air..

Let's go back in time a 120 years. It is 1893 and you want to go shopping downtown or to the new Nickelodeon. To get there you will have to take the trolley or walk, but if you live too far from the city center you will need a horse or a horse and buggy. You are lucky you live a few blocks from the center of town so you get your hat and gloves on to walk downtown. It takes you about 40 minutes of walking to get where you are going and you shop. You went to the dry goods store, the meat market, the fruit man, and arranged for them to deliver your items later. The band is playing in the park so you decide to listen awhile since you are hot and tired. The soda fountain has a new drink called Coke Cola so you go to try it. Now, it is time to walk home. As you approach your house the first cart from your shopping is arriving. The scene I just wrote is what life was like before the car. There were no malls, no urban neighborhoods with shopping centers. You HAD to go downtown if you wanted something. This is how the car changed life.
