· The influence of the Magna Carta can be found in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Article 21 from the Declaration of Rights in the Maryland Constitution of 1776 reads: "That no freeman ought to be taken, or imprisoned, or disseized of his freehold, liberties, or privileges, or outlawed, or exiled, or in any manner destroyed, or deprived of his life, liberty, or property, but by the judgment of his peers, or by the law of the land."
It was the first document that gave so much power to the people that they could over-ride what the king or ruler said. We created the U.S. Declaration of Independence by exercising our right to resign from the crown. We could only do this because King George broke the English common law that should have applied to the colonies. Simply, it affected us because we used that ability to over-ride what the king said, and we used its principals to create the declaration.
After he signed the Magna Carta, the English king was no longer an absolute monarch but had to acknowledge certain rights of commoners. The spirit that Englishmen had certain rights that could not abridged by the king led to the Declaration of Independence. The Bill of Rights which was added to the Constitution spelled out the rights of the common man more explicitly and was undoubtedly inspired in part by the Magna Carta.
By limiting the monarch (Louis XIV I believe, though I am not sure), the Magna Carta set an example for future governments by making a system of balances to the monarch.
