The Alps are the mountains that would have to be crossed.
How do the landmarks of China and India differ from (or resemble) those of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia
No mountains surrounded the Roman empire. In fact, the Roman empire surrounded several ranges of mountains, or at least considered them as borders in a way. There were the Apennines right in Italy itself with the Alps up in the north. The Atlas mountains were in Africa and the Pyrenees between France and Spain. These were in addition to the mountain ranges in Greece and those of many of their other provinces.
