The peace treaty that ended the American Revolution, known as the Treaty of Paris (1783), established the boundaries of the United States. It recognized the independence of the thirteen colonies and set the northern boundary at the Great Lakes, the western boundary at the Mississippi River, and the southern boundary at Florida. This significantly expanded the territory of the United States and set the stage for westward expansion.
