The Philippines being an archipelago, meaning surrounded by waters was the main reason why the navigators from some parts of the world had easy access to it. At that time, the main form of transportation was ships. With five vessels and about 265 men, Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese navigator reached the Philippines on March 16, 1521.
Had the Philippines been not an archipelago or had it not been surrounded by waters, there was a big possibility that Magellan could not reached it. On this note, Spain could not have colonized Philippines too for 333 years.
