The pioneers had no knowledge of dirty water in the sense of it having bacteria or other harmful things in it. So that meaning of "dirty water" is not applicable here.
Dirty water, in the sense of it being cloudy or muddy was most likely filtered through any cloth or cloth like material, the pioneer had on hand. it is probably, in most cases
they would collect water from the clearest part of the stream or pond and then let
what ever sediment was in it, settle down to the bottom of the container the water was collected in. If they were really thirsty, then they would probably drink it anyway. Be thankful that you didn't live back then.

Water TREATMENT AND WASTE WATER has improved since the 1800s by the public, government implementation of water treatment plants and sewage plants. The government has been able to pipe clean water to homes, commercial places and government places. This stopped some of the sickness that came from dirty water. They also have been able to take the toilet water and drainage water and clean it up. It is reused safely on crops, lawns, gardens and in toilets in very arid areas. Many people object to bottled water but it provides safe water for children and adults anywhere. It is up to responsible adults and kids to place containers in the proper recycle places. They make decks and other things with the plastic from the bottles.

So you can drink clean water, instead of dirty filthy water that can make you sick.
The principle is 'dilution': with the first addition of clean water to dirty water, the dirty water becomes less dirty because it is diluted by the clean water. With the continued addition of clean water to dirty water, eventually the dirty water will be completely diluted and there will be no dirty water left; it will all be replaced by clean water.
to clean dirty water it needs to be cleaned or filtered
