A bill, passed by Radical Republicans in Congress in 1867, that treated Southern states as divided territories. Sometimes called the Military Reconstruction Act or the Reconstruction Act, the First Reconstruction Act divided the South into five districts, each governed by martial law. It was the first of a series of harsher bills that the Radicals passed that year
It frightened some whites.
Reconstruction collapsed around 1877, when Southern Democrats gained power in all the former Confederate states. The Southern Democrats opposed the reforms of Reconstruction and deprived African-Americans of the political rights they had gained during Reconstruction.
The civil rights movement addressed the failures of Reconstruction by advocating for equal rights, social justice, and an end to segregation and discrimination based on race. It sought to dismantle the Jim Crow laws and fight for voting rights and economic equality for African Americans, building on the progress that was halted by the reversal of Reconstruction policies in the late 19th century.
Yes, "Gay Rights Movement" should be capitalized as it refers to a specific social and political movement advocating for the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Reconstruction was only partially successful for a short time. When reconstruction ended, much of the south returned to its racist ways. It remained for the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s to complete the work that might have been accomplished with Reconstruction.
