A big factor was whether slavery was to exist in the newly formed western states and in the territory acquired in the American mexican war. The south of course wanted slavery to exist there and to have pro slavery senators and representatives in those new states to assure that any legislative means to abolish slavery would be blocked. However it became apparent that much of the newly formed states would not favor slavery. The south anticipated that they eventually would be the minority in congress. Moreover with Lincoln and the republicans in power it became evident that congress may soon abolish slavery. Also slavery was essential to the south's economy and cotton became a huge industry. Wealthy land owners would not allow the north to abolish slavery. Also there was still a romantic image of war and both sides believed the war would be over after a few battles. Apparently they were wrong.

The political issue behind the question of expanding slavery after the Mexican-American War was whether the newly acquired territories would be free or slave states. This debate ultimately led to the Compromise of 1850, which temporarily resolved the issue by allowing some territories to decide on the issue of slavery through popular sovereignty.

The moral and political actions of those opposed to the spread of slavery in the context of The Mexican War and The Kansas-Nebraska Act are very conflicting. With the upset in balance of the Mexican War, antislavery activists were upset about any potential compromise while with the Kansas-Nebraska act, they settled with the idea of them being in a state of popular sovereignty.
The Mexican-American War exacerbated political problems in the US by reigniting debates over the expansion of slavery. The acquisition of Mexican territories, such as California and New Mexico, raised questions about whether slavery should be allowed in these new territories. This disagreement between Northern and Southern states further polarized the nation and ultimately contributed to the growing tensions that led to the American Civil War.

Political slavery doesn't exist. Economic slavery does. One reason political slavery doesn't exist is the people in the government can change the government. Slaves are property and are owned by someone.
