Just about the same, or even poorer. After the Mexican war of independence, many Spanish and criollo businessmen ceased to invest in Mexico, switching from a market economy to subsistence farming and ranching. Only certain regions in northern Mexico continued to keep their business, thus the majority of the population became poorer.
