They were built because terrain's were to low or something to that sort were to low and they needed a new way of transportation so they invented the railroads, which helped the economy out a lot. It let farmers have more crops because they could ship things faster which meant more money and it helped people get to where their going faster.

railroads help the economic growth of the united states with money. the owners of the companies raised prices and as more people went to further places, more money was made. as the number of customers decreased, the prices went down so more customers will be able to afford it.

USA is a very large country. Railroads were a very good way for fast transportation of people, food and manufactured goods accross land. Traver or transportation by train was fast, relatively cheap and enabled to move great volume of goods from one point to another.
